What Is Chronic Pain?
Pain is said to be chronic if it persists beyond the normal tissue healing time of about three months. After this time your tissues are generally fully healed, yet pain can persist. This is because your nervous system can become overly sensitive, amplifying messages to your brain, leading to feelings of pain even when there is no longer any tissue damage.
So what causes your nervous system to become overly sensitive in the first place? Chronic pain is complex with many contributors and influencing factors. Your thoughts, beliefs and expectations, stress levels and quality of sleep, your level of physical activity, diet & lifestyle choices, even your sense of social connection can all influence the sensitivity of your nervous system to pain, for better or worse.
How We Help
At the Health Formula, we’ll take the time to listen to your story and understand the unique factors that may be contributing to your on-going pain. Pain is a very personal thing and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. We’ll work with you to develop a customised treatment plan to help retrain your nervous system and provide you with the coaching and support you’ll need along the way. Our approach includes:
- Pain education to help you understand your pain and ‘tame the beast’
- Manual therapy to help get you moving again
- Graded exercise to gradually build your tolerance to movement and de-sensitise your nervous system
- Advice for overall health improvements, including stress management, sleep optimisation and dietary modifications to reduced the sensitivity of your nervous system
