What is Health Coaching?

Who Can Benefit from Health Coaching?

Health coaching is for anyone, regardless of age, gender, profession, health challenge or goals. The coaching process is always the same – it is centred around and focused on you and your specific situation. Each person is different, and so is each coaching session.

As health coaches we tailor the coaching process to you as an individual, so that you can experience the biggest changes. Instead of telling you what to do or applying a cookie-cutter approach, we help you find your own motivation and discover your underlying desire/reason for change.

We start with creating your vision during a full-hours session to craft out what your perfect life will look like.

Functional Medicine vs Health Coaching

So, what’s the main difference between working with a Functional Medicine Practitioner and a Health Coach?

While health coaching takes a functional medicine approach to health, it is entirely focused on the change process. Health coaches don’t tell you what to do, or prescribe treatment plans, but instead help you make healthy lifestyle and behaviour changes in line with functional medicine principles. Health coaches are experts in human behaviour, motivation, and health.

If you work with a Functional Medicine practitioner and they prescribe some needed changes for you to make, health coaching is what helps you make them. For some clients the proposed dietary, lifestyle and stress management advice may seem overwhelming. Working with a coach, while following the functional health practitioner’s guidelines, will help you prioritise what is most important to you, and take the type of steps you need to make it work for you.

Health Coaching vs Life Coaching

Both coaches are trained in behaviour change and use tools such as Motivational Interviewing and Positive Psychology to help you overcome obstacles and successfully make changes. Even though health coaches have additional specific knowledge in health, this doesn’t mean that other topics are excluded from coaching. Health is so much broader than just physical health, it includes every aspect of your life.

Health Coaching vs Counselling/Therapy

Coaches don’t diagnose or treat mental health issues. They work alongside a therapist to help a client deal with life’s challenges, but in a more forward-looking way than what you experience in therapy or counselling. Coaching is concerned with the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of change, not so much the ‘why’ of how you got here. It’s about ‘where will you go?’ and ‘how can we make this happen?
